Separating aspect

Definition

A separating aspect is one where the faster planet has already passed exactness with the slower planet and the orb is widening rather than narrowing. The peak of the configuration is behind it. Traditional astrology reads separating aspects as past-leaning: the event the aspect described has already occurred, and the chart is now metabolizing the aftermath rather than gathering toward arrival.

In context

If transiting Saturn at fifteen degrees of Aquarius has just crossed natal Sun at fourteen degrees of Aquarius and is moving forward, the conjunction is now separating. The chart shows the contact in its waning phase: the symbolic weight is shedding rather than building, and the story the transit opened is closing out. The separating / applying distinction is one of the oldest timing tools in astrology, especially in horary work.

To go deeper

The separating / applying distinction colors aspect-in-time readings:

  • Applying aspect: orb narrowing, charge rising.
  • Orb: distance from exact, the unit measured here.
  • Transit: main surface where separating matters.
