Ruler
Definition
A ruler is the planet traditionally assigned to govern a sign. Each of the twelve zodiac signs has a planet that organizes its expression, that "rules" it. Knowing the ruler of your Sun, Moon, or Rising sign means knowing which planet to look at to understand how that sign's energy moves through your chart, what house it works in, and which aspects shape it.
In context
If your Sun is in Aries, the ruler is Mars: where Mars sits in your chart (its sign, its house, its aspects) describes how your Aries Sun actually shows up beyond the sign itself. The ruler acts like a delegate: the sign hands over the file, the ruler opens it. This is why two people with Sun in Aries can feel very different. Mars in Taurus and Mars in Gemini tell different stories with the same opening word.
To go deeper
The ruler sits next to several neighboring notions:
- Domicile: the sign a planet rules.
- Exaltation: the sign where it shines best.
- Dispositor: ruler of the sign another planet falls in.
