Triplicity
Definition
A triplicity is the classical three-planet rulership share assigned to each element. The four elements split the zodiac into four triplets of signs, and each triplet was historically governed by a small team of planets rather than by a single ruler. Day chart, night chart, and a third participating role distribute the dignity across the three planets, giving the element a layered chain of command.
In context
If your Sun sits in a fire sign, the triplicity rulers of fire shape the way that Sun's expression is supported. By day, one planet leads the team; by night, another takes the lead; a participating planet rounds out the trio across both charts. The triplicity rarely shows up in a casual reading, but it returns when a traditional astrologer wants to understand which planets are quietly helping a ruler of the chart do its work.
To go deeper
Triplicity belongs to the classical dignity ladder:
- Domicile: full rulership of a sign.
- Exaltation: elevated dignity in one sign.
- Term: minor dignity over a degree range.
